RATS 50 Endurance MTB Race

Eagle, CO
September 20, 2020

Updated 7/31/20

Here is our full list of safety protocol for the Mountain RATS Festival.

Updated 7/24/20

We’re excited to bring the 2020 Mountain RATS Festival to Eagle, CO. We are grateful to have this chance to celebrate the Eagle outdoor community. We will have a full list of protocols and rules to make this event go off in a triumphant and respectful manner. As the pandemic continues to evolve, there is a strong chance some of these protocols will too.  We promise to communicate any changes via email, social media and our website – but it is ultimately your responsibility to read, understand and follow the full list.

This is a friendly community based event. Politics has no place here in relation to these rules. Our ability to hold these races is contingent on following these safety rules put into place. If you do not wish to abide by the rules you will be asked to leave the venue. This is a chance for all of us to get off social media, enjoy the mountains and challenge ourselves. We can accomplish this if we’re able to ensure everyone is following county health guidelines.

Here is a summary of the main points:

  • ALL participants (runners & volunteers) are required to:
    • Sign a COVID-specific waiver
    • Wear a mask at all times, except when 1) running 2) eating/drinking
  • Limited Menu & Service at Aid Stations
  • Crew and Spectators Strongly Discouraged
  • Modified Awards Ceremony
  • Wave Starts

2020 Races are a go!

We’re continuing to closely monitor local regulations and recommendations for the September Mountain RATS events in the town of Eagle. Health and safety is our number one priority and this extends to racers, volunteers and staff. At this time we are very optimistic for the Mountain RATS Festival. The town of Eagle is currently cleared for gatherings of up to 175 people and we will begin letting people off the waitlist on July 15th.

With the current regulations and number of participants registered and on the waitlist, we are expecting everyone will be able to race. However, there is always the possibility that as restrictions change we may have to cap the number of entrants. If this becomes the case, we will be using the following criteria on a first come, first served basis that will be determined by the date your Mountain RATS registration was received.

Entrant priority:

1. Racers who transferred from Desert RATS Trail Running Festival, Rabbit Valley Half and Desert RATS Classic before May 1st
2. Racers who registered for Mountain RATS with waitlist status (in the event that the races have to be postponed to 2021 we will allow the 85% deferral option as stated in our refund policy on UltraSignup)
3. Racers who transferred from other races May 1st or after.

We feel very fortunate to have such great news from the town of Eagle and will keep you updated on what the event will look like. The town is doing an amazing job of managing health and safety. We can’t wait to see you all in September!

50K
31 mi with 6500’+ of climbing
Low Point 6607′ – High Point 9142′

The Mountain RATS 50K starts in the heart of Eagle, next to Color Roasters. Racers begin by riding 2 miles on the bike path along Eagle Ranch Road and Haystacker Drive, where a right turn onto the Turniphead Trail marks the start of dirt miles until the finish.
Just shy of a mile after turning onto dirt, riders pass through the Arroyo trailhead, at mile 2.4. From Arroyo, the course continues steadily up, first on double track on Third Gulch Trail, then veering left onto singletrack on Pipeline Trail. Throughout this climb, riders travel from sage-covered high desert into beautiful aspen groves on the Pipeline Trail. 1300 vertical feet above Arroyo, runners reach aid station #1, Firebox, at mile 6.5.
Racers leave the aid station and continue uphill on Hardscrabble Road briefly to a hard right turn onto Firebox Road. After 2 miles with some steep climbs through forest and pastureland on Firebox Road, riders veer left onto singletrack and descend to toward Dead Cow.
A steep but short climb awaits riders as they leave the aid station onto Mike’s Night Out. The course rewards with sweeping views as it continues on Mike’s Night Out, gently descending to aid station #2, Spring Creek, at mile 13.0. A short and beautiful ride on Itch will take you to the World’s Greatest downhill much of which is fast and flowy and some is just steep.
After a sharp left turn at the Schoolhouse trail the course brings you back up to the Spring Creek aid station through Star Wars and easy Rider. After Reaching Spring Creek #2 riders once again get to experience World’s Greatest.
From here, the fun isn’t quite over, as the course heads up one final 200-foot climb. From the top of this punchy climb, the trail makes a serpentine descent to the Horton Street Trailhead. Riders head down the neighborhood street and turn left onto the bike path. A short 0.4 miles along this path lead to the finish line and after party at Color Coffee Roasters.
