Marital Status: Single

Number of Children: 0

Occupation: Writer / Speaker / Accountant

Years running: 20

Years running ultras: 9

Ultras I have done: JFK50, American River, Run on the Sly, North Face Endurance, Kansas Ultra Festival, various Pacific Coast trail races

Favorite race and why: Favorite (so far) is Trans-Pecos Ultra, even though my experience on it was as a volunteer and staff. Gorgeous surroundings, rugged experience, loved it!

Best results in races: There was “then” and there’s “now” (with 2 foot surgeries in between) Best 50K was my first one: 6:25.

Tell us something about yourself, running related or other: Love love love to write, and have published race reports as well as feature stories in UltraRunning magazine.

What’s your favorite way to train for Desert RATS: I’ll train with back-to-back long runs, and use other ultra races as my super-long-runs.

What are your goals for Desert RATS: Enjoy the beauty of the desert and the company of some good friends. I hope and plan to have enough training under my belt that I can purely enjoy the mileage each day. This race occurs in one of my favorite parts of the world!

December – Letter from Reid

December Letter from Reid

December Letter from Reid |

Adventurers,

It’s been 8 weeks since I broke my leg. I’ve been waiting for this moment for…well, 8 weeks. I was told it would be healed up in 8 weeks. I thought this meant I’d be able to throw off my cast and start upping my weekly miles.

Not only am I not running, but I never reached my sub-15 minute crutches mile – I’m barely even walking without my crutches. What can I do for adventure?

I can paddle. Time for a 27 mile flatwater paddle down the Ruby/Horsethief section of the Colorado River. It has all the makings of a sufferfest: endurance, freezing temperatures, beautiful scenery and the possibility of epic failure. True adventure. The key was to stop thinking of what I can’t do and figure out what I can do.

Check out the video of my trip.
